The highway passes through Palm Cove and Ellis Beach. Rex Lookout offers one of the best coastal views on the route. From there the highway continues north to the Port Douglas turnoff at Craiglie.

The Captain Cook Highway is one of Australia’s most celebrated coastal drives.It runs from Cairns north through the Northern Beaches and on to Port Douglas. For much of the route it hugs the Coral Sea on the right and rainforest ranges on the left.
Palm Cove is the first major stop after the airport. The esplanade is visible from the highway. Ellis Beach follows. It is a wide palm-lined stretch with a cafe and surf club.
Rex Lookout comes after Ellis Beach. It is the high point of the drive. Panoramic views of the Coral Sea open from the lookout platform. Hang gliders often launch from this point and can be seen soaring over the coastline below. After Rex Lookout the highway continues through Wangetti. Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures sits on this stretch of road. From there the route heads toward the Port Douglas turnoff at Craiglie.
